Shakespeare in Love brings the Bard’s greatest stories to life through music that spans centuries and styles. From sparkling comedy and fairy-tale magic to sweeping romance and tragedy, this program shows how composers have translated Shakespeare’s drama into unforgettable sound.
The evening builds toward Shakespeare’s most enduring love story with two powerful interpretations of Romeo and Juliet. Sergei Prokofiev’s “Montagues and Capulets” drives the drama with its bold, menacing march and explosive tension, contrasted by moments of aching tenderness from his Suite No. 2. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Overture-Fantasy closes the program in a surge of passion, conflict, and tragic beauty.
