Ms. Hughston, Mr. Kroening, Mr. Loyde, Directors
Membership Requirements: The Central Texas Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (CTPYO) is open to student members of ages 13-18 not yet graduated from high school. All students must be members in good standing of their school’s orchestra and/or band program if such a program exists on the campus. Orchestra or Band Directors are expected to verify student enrollment prior to a student audition for membership. Any student who drops out or is removed from the school’s orchestra or band program will immediately forfeit membership in CTPYO. Membership in the CTPYO is for one full season. The season runs concurrently with the academic school year. Students are expected to participate for the entire season.
Auditions: Auditions will be held during the course of the first concert cycle and may be adjusted periodically throughout the season. Student experience and maturity on their instrument will be a primary factor with concern for a balanced instrumentation. Auditions will determine placement within CTPYO.
Auditions will consist of:
- Four, two-octave scales of your choice. (major or minor)
- Two, short contrasting pieces/excerpts that highlight your technique and musical ability. (no more than 90 seconds for each
Acceptance into the Orchestra:
Students will be notified in writing (email) of acceptance into the group. Once positive notification is received, students should begin to plan for rehearsal and concert attendance, including resolving all possible conflicts.
Section, Part, and Seating Assignment:
Section, part and seating assignments will be made and adjusted during the first few weeks of rehearsals for the first concert. Chair placements and solo/part assignments will be made by the CTPYO teaching staff based upon audition, chair-tests, rotation, experience or other method selected by the CTPYO staff. These assignments are subject to change throughout the season.
Rehearsal /Concert Dates and Times:
The calendar of concerts and rehearsals is contained within this handbook. All rehearsals are on Sunday afternoons from 2:00 to 4:30 PM. All concerts are on Sunday afternoons. Students who would need to consistently arrive late or leave early should not consider membership in CTPYO.
Students are expected to attend all rehearsals and performances. In the event of illness or family emergency, students must notify the CTPYO Director in advance. Any student with repeating attendance problems may be removed from the group.
Tuition for the 2019-2020 Season is $250. Additional family members are $200 each. Upon notification of student membership, a minimum $100 tuition deposit must be made by September 15, 2019. The remaining balance must be paid in full before December 15, 2019. Students that leave membership in CTPYO for any reason will not be eligible for a refund of any portion of the tuition or fees.
It is the philosophy of the CTPYO that no talented, dedicated student should be denied membership based on an inability to pay tuition. Full and partial scholarships are available. Parents will be asked to provide information concerning the hardship and student’s school director will be expected to provide a letter of recommendation in order for the student to be considered. Ask the CTPYO Directors for more information.
Student members of CTPYO are expected to display outstanding, exemplary behavior at all CTPYO rehearsals and at all times while representing the orchestra. Students will show respect for themselves, fellow student members, rehearsal instructors and conductors at all times. Failure to meet this expectation may result in removal from the group with no refund of tuition or fees.
For ladies: full length solid black dress or solid black blouse and full length solid black skirt with black stockings and closed-toed black shoes.
For gentlemen: Black tuxedo or black suit jacket with white tuxedo shirt, black bow tie, black cummerbund or vest, and black dress shoes with black socks. Students failing to wear this prescribed concert attire will not perform at concerts.
